Stand By Me

The concept for this drawing came to me after watching a documentary on Netflix called ‘Countdown to Zero’. This frightening documentary takes a look at the threats posed by the growing list of nuclear armed states and weighs up the prospects of global disarmament.

After this programme had stirred up my emotions as a father and as it would all concerned parents bringing up their children in this crazy world. I decided I wanted to express these emotions within a drawing. But to do this I would need to create something which has an impact from the moment you see it and makes the viewer feel what I was feeling.

And so it was from there I had the idea to call upon my children to help me recreate the scene I imagined. I needed references to make this work and I needed props so I got to work immediately.
Below are the first references of my two children, I used a fan to simulate wind from the distant blast and asked them to hold hands and look straight into the fan. The first shot was with the fan to the side which didn’t work and wasn’t used.Stand by me drawing10348441_10204682946169513_5655856073630253857_nSo now I needed another reference which I obviously could not create myself. So then I went online and found the image I needed.

Now with all I needed to get started it was time to put pencil to paper. Below are some of the photograghs I took during this project.

Once completed I was stuck for a title, that was until the song ‘Stand By Me’ came on and immediately I had a connection.
